Citizen Supply exists to support the people that are behind the product. Investing endless amounts of time and energy daily into creating something meaningful for the world. We believe when small businesses unite, something really BIG happens.
Today, we get the opportunity to hear from Steve Soderholm, founder of Ranger Station, on what his business means to him, how he got started, and what his favorite drink is.
Q: Describe your brand in two words.
A: Packaged Experience
Q: What do you want to see more of in the world?
A: A redefining of success. I so often see people pushing success as working all hours of the day with no friends or family so that you can die with the most money. I want there to be a shift in thinking to the reality that at the end of our lives, we should be proud of what we've accomplished. Part of the accomplishment might be financial, but more importantly, whether or not we had strong relationships with others and made amazing memories with those people.
Q: What is one of your favorite products from your line?
A: Unfair question, haha! But seriously, my favorite things to create are the fragrances that go into all our products. Not to get too nerdy on you, but humans remember 5% of what we see, 2% of what we hear, 1% of what we touch and 35% of what we smell. Our brains are wired for fragrance to set the tone for how we remember our favorite experiences and that gets me stoked. Ranger Station gets to be a small part of helping people making amazing memories, and memories are the currency of life.
Q: How do you make those fragrances?
A: Lots of trial and error. There is an endless amount of raw material we can work with when creating new scents. We start with a goal of what we want something to smell like and literally start mixing and testing until we get there. At Ranger Station, we use sustainably sourced and developed natural and synthetic raw materials to ensure that the end-user gets the best, safest, and most sustainable product they can.
** A quick side note on raw materials: There is a common misconception that "all-natural" is always the best. A colleague once put it best by saying 'poison is all-natural'. The reality is that sometimes all-natural is best and sometimes it can be terrible for you.
Q: Who makes up the team at Ranger Station?
A: We have a small team of 4 full-timers, a handful of contractors, and an insane amount of emotional support from my wife and dog. We have two (sometimes more during the holidays) guys who are in charge of making and shipping all of our products to our amazing customers. We have a Director of Operations who is over all the fun spreadsheet stuff like inventory and forecasting which hurts my brain. Every day looks different for me, but the time I cherish the most is when I get to work on new products and new fragrances.
Q: What's your favorite food?
Q: What about a favorite drink?
A: Now we're talking. So, as you may or may not know, most of our candles are in whiskey glasses and I LOVE making cocktails at home. My current favorite drink doesn't have a name (yet). It is a take on a Black Manhattan and a Greenpoint. Maybe I'll call it the Bushwick. It is as follows: 2oz Rye Whiskey / 0.5oz Yellow Chartreuse / 0.5oz Amaro / 1 dash Angostura Bitters / 1 dash Orange Bitters / Lemon Peel Garnish. Stirred on ice and strained into a coupe glass.
